Shirley Jamieson is Head of Marketing and Communications at Cambridge Enterprise, the commercialisation subsidiary of the University of Cambridge. Shirley co-authored the successful bid to create the Cambridge Entrepreneurship Centre, where she was Head of External Relations and which evolved into Cambridge Enterprise in 2004. She is Chair of the Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust, a Trustee of Blue Smile and was a on the Governing Body of Anglia Ruskin University until 2012 and on the Advisory Board of the Future Business Centre.

Shirley has extensive experience of start-up companies from more than 15 years in executive search and of consultancy work, mainly specializing in senior appointments for technology-based companies.

Her experience in supporting students and academics of the University of Cambridge in the achievement of societal impact through the commercialization of their ideas and expertise can positively impact the lives of the world’s poorest 3 billion people.

Shirley’s personal motivation for contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals by joining the Global Challenges Forum stems from observing the positive impact that arises from research that has been commercialized that can benefit the most vulnerable. Two examples are the development of diagnostic tools to detect HIV (Diagnostic for the Real World – Dr Helen Lee, Department of Haematology,) and Azuri (a spin-off from Eight19 that has combined solar and mobile phone technology to provide power to off-grid customers in rural and remote areas in areas such as Africa and which is replacing the use of kerosene).  This year Cambridge Enterprise has also selected Microloan as its Charity of the Year, which helps women in Africa to work their way out of poverty.

Cambridge Global Challenges is a Strategic Research Initiative of the University of Cambridge that aims to enhance the contribution of its research towards addressing global challenges and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
