International Development Research @ Cambridge

Innovation Fellowships will nurture future leaders in both industry and the research base, promote greater mobility between them and ensure that a variety of UK industrial sectors have a supply of skilled researchers. Applications are sought in alignment with the Industrial Strategy, in areas that have been identified as relevant to EPSRC or recognised priority areas at the interface of engineering and physical science research.

The National Productivity Investment Fund (NPIF) has allocated £38.9 million which we expect to fund 65-85 EPSRC-UKRI Innovation Fellowship proposals. A further £1.6 million from AHRC, a minimum of £1 million from BBSRC and £0.4 million from ESRC will be available to co-fund research at specified interfaces. These aim to support excellent engineering and physical sciences research aligned to the Industrial Strategy challenges as identified by the open priority areas. Some of these fellowships may fall at the interface of disciplines and to reflect of our support of these areas EPSRC has recognised a number of Interface areas which are available to apply to.

Applications are particularly welcome from international researchers who may be designated Rutherford fellows; the Rutherford Fellowships were announced in July 2017. The Rutherford Fund will provide fellowships for researchers, from both the developed world and emerging research powerhouses like India, China, Brazil and Mexico, helping to maintain the UK's position as a world-leader in science and research.

Innovation Fellowships will nurture future leaders in both industry and the research base and promote greater mobility between them and ensure that a variety of UK industrial sectors have a supply of skilled researchers. The cohort of fellows will develop their leadership experience, entrepreneurial and enterprise skills in a crucial phase of their careers as they establish themselves and develop beyond post-doctoral and early career work.

A list and description of these areas can be found within the call guidance.
