GCI became a SRI of the University of Cambridge on 1st October 2017. The celebration of the launch of the SRI that took place in King's College on the 6th November served as an opportunity to thank long standing members for their key contributions so far, to welcome new members and to discuss GCI's future plans.
GCI's Director of Research David Good opened the session with a short description of the history of the GCI and its role in advancing with the mission of the University - "to contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning, and research at the highest international levels of excellence." Pro-Vice Chancellor Research Chris Abell then outlined the general roles of SRIs in addressing interdisciplinary research at Cambridge and the process by which GCI was selected to respond to global challenges for the University. GCI's Director of Research Alan Blackwell followed by briefly speaking about the goals and future plans for GCI, and thanking both Lara Allen, GCI's Director of Implementation and Impact, and Sara Serradas Duarte, GCI's Coordinator, for their work in bringing about the formation of the Initiative. Lara Allen concluded the session by thanking all members for their participation in GCI and encouraging them to keep shaping the plans and contributing to future work conducted by the SRI.
The brief presentations were followed by canapés and wine, and a chance for the members of the GCI from across the university to interact and discuss their roles in the Initiative.
The event was a warm and welcoming start to the Initiative's work and we look forward to keep celebrating forthcoming milestones and achievements with GCI members.
