New ESRC CEO and Executive Chair Designate announced

Science Minister Jo Johnson has announced that Professor Jennifer Rubin has been appointed Chief Executive and Executive Chair Designate of the ESRC. Professor Rubin will continue as Chief Executive until the end of March 2018 and, upon the creation of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) on 1 April, will become ESRC's Executive Chair.

Defects in next-generation solar cells can be healed with light

A team from Cambridge, MIT, Oxford, Bath and Delft has shown that defects in the molecular structure of perovskites – a material which could revolutionise the solar cell industry – can be “healed” by exposing it to light and just the right amount of humidity.

Study clears important hurdle towards developing an HIV vaccine

Working with scientists in the UK, France, the USA and the Netherlands, Professor Jonathan Heeney from the Laboratory of Viral Zoonotics has demonstrated a way of overcoming one of the major stumbling blocks that has prevented the development of a vaccine against HIV. The difficulty hitherto has been the ability to generate immune cells that stay in circulation long enough to respond to and stop virus infection.

Cambridge to launch lectureship in Chinese urban development

The new lectureship will be funded through a gift of £1m to the Department of Land Economy by the Pecan Foundation Limited, a charity organization founded by Dr Justin Chiu. Dr. Chiu is a Senior Visiting Fellow of the Department of Land Economy, and is currently an Executive Director of Cheung Kong Asset Holdings Limited in Hong Kong. The funding will also support an ambitious new research and engagement programme in Chinese urban development.

Decision Making Under Uncertainty Networks

The research councils are driving action to develop a multidisciplinary research community focussed on decision making under uncertainty. Two networks, funded by ESRC, EPSRC and NERC, are working with practitioner organisations to analyse real world decisions and identify where multi-disciplinary research can develop new approaches to improve decision making under uncertainty.
