International Development Secretary celebrates growing relationship between financial hubs of London and Lagos

The International Development Secretary Priti Patel has today welcomed London’s first African convertible bond at the opening of the London Stock Exchange. In an address to investors from London and Lagos, Ms. Patel said that “trade, investment and finance have helped to transform the prospects for the world’s poorest countries”.

Healthcare professionals and engineers partner to test new engineering model for health and social care improvement

Applying a more holistic or ‘joined-up’ systems approach to health and social care provision could help transform the way these essential services are delivered and address the needs of a changing patient population, according to a joint report published by the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Royal College of Physicians. Professor John Clarkson (University of Cambridge) chaired the joint working group that produced the report.

Eight new PhD training centres to boost UK's data science expertise

Data-intensive science in the UK has received a major boost thanks to an investment of almost £10 million to train the next generation of experts in this important research area. The constant advancement of computer technology has had a profound impact on science and industry, making possible some of the most important discoveries in recent years. Thanks to increasingly powerful technology, researchers can gather, store and utilise vast amounts of data – but to help to make sense of this data, many more expert data scientists are needed. Eight new centres will be based at 19 universities, including the University of Cambridge.

AHRC Heritage launched to enhance UK heritage research

AHRC Heritage Research, a priority area established to enhance heritage research across the UK, was launched in early October at a three-day major conference in London. The AHRC Heritage Research team - led by Professor Rodney Harrison at University College London - will raise the profile of the heritage sector and provide leadership by working with the research community and partner organisations, in particular helping early career researchers to access opportunities.
