International Development Research @ Cambridge

Professor Cecilia Mascolo (Department of Computer Science and Technology) and Professor Pietro Cicuta (Department of Physics) have, together with Professor Andres Floto (Research Director of the Cambridge Centre for Lung Infection at Papworth Hospital) launched a web app for large-scale, crowdsourced data collection.

Since April 2020, the COVID-19 Sounds App has been collecting voice, breathing and coughing data through phone microphones to inform the diagnosis of COVID-19 by developing machine learning algorithms. Recently published in JMIR, these data allowed development of an audio-based COVID-19 progression monitoring system using deep learning techniques to accurately predict COVID-19 progression. This could potentially help guide medical treatment and provide a useful tool to track COVID-19 cheaply and flexibly.
