The CSC provides the main UK government scholarship scheme led by international development objectives. By supporting innovators and leaders of the future from across the Commonwealth, and by attracting outstanding talent to Britain’s universities, the CSC’s work combines sustainable development with the UK national interest.
Appointed by the Secretary of State for International Development, Commonwealth Scholarship Commissioners are drawn from a range of academic, development, diplomatic, and private sector backgrounds. Their main roles are to select recipients of Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships through selection committees, provide policy direction and oversight, monitor the effectiveness of awards, and ensure appropriate structures for governance and accountability.
Commissioners are expected to devote a minimum time commitment of 12-15 days per annum to the role, and this may be higher in the case of those who chair committees. Positions are voluntary and unpaid, although Commissioners receive an honorarium in respect of each selection meeting attended. Travel and subsistence costs are also reimbursed.
